The designers at Gramofone have long held the notion that by combining old audio wisdom — we try not to forget the lessons from the past — with some carefully selected new technology, it would be possible to create an amplifier capable of going further down the road towards higher fidelity than traditional solid state or vacuum tube-based designs.
The Gramofone Integrated represents the outcome of this project.
The result is an amplifier which sounds nothing like a solid state amp, and nothing like a vacuum tube amp. In fact it sounds like nothing at all really. Switch it on and it just simply vanishes, taking its place — music which has come to life.
Most parts used in the construction are bespoke and are machined by hand from brass, copper and wood. Each amplifier takes one man month to build, and those fortunate enough to own a Gramofone product will experience this each time they look at or listen to it.
Feet and volume knob are sand cast, then machined from LG2 bronze. The bronze is allowed to 'cure' for a period of some weeks until it reaches its most golden brown appearance, then we apply an anti-oxidising agent to the parts to maintain this golden lustre and prevent further oxidation.
Similar to the Bronze Edition but with some additional details, including gold-plated trim. Here the bronze feet and volume knob have been 24 ct. gold plated. Internally there are some minor luxury improvements including the use of the world's most expensive (and accurate) resistors in the signal path. 24 ct. gold-plated signal-wiring is used throughout the device adding even more warmth and lushness to the musical performance.
Based on dual mono architecture, the amp uses two of the world's finest sounding power operational amplifier chipsets, combined with a retro-style build implementation in which all plastics and metal film resistors are eschewed in favour of natural materials, carbons and ceramics.
ULTRA-QUIET POWER SUPPLYExtremely quiet and tightly regulated power is critical if an amplifier is to perform among the World's best. In contrast to the signal path which deliberately kept as simple as possible, the power supply is specifically designed for audio using the latest advancements in (switch-mode) technology and is operating at 84 kHz — at least 2 octaves above human hearing — to perform AC/DC rectification. The result is power so quiet that when the listener places his ear next to the loudspeaker it is normally not possible to tell if the amplifier is On or Off… until it starts playing music, that is.
ANTI-VIBRATION SYSTEMAs another example, nestled beneath the Classical bronze-cast feet lies an anti-vibration system — originally developed as stealth technology for nuclear submarines — which is a contributor to the unique sound of this amplifier.
EXTERNAL CONNECTIONSThe Gramofone Integrated allows switching (via a toggle switch on front panel) between two RCA input sources.
Further, the preamplifier output stage can be directly connected to via the bottom set of RCA connections on the rear panel. This allows the Gramofone Integrated to be used solely as a preamplifier, if required.
Finally, an external grounding post is attached to the brass backplate of the amplifier. This allows the possibility to connect other ancillary equipment to a common ground connection.
POWER OUTPUT & COMPATIBILITYPower output is approximately 35 WPC into 8 Ohm (nominal) speaker loads. Remembering that the power operational amplifiers were specifically designed to drive 8 Ohm loads, it can also function to a reasonable level with 6 Ohm speaker loads. 4 Ohm (nominal) loudspeaker systems represent too far a shift from the design goals of the amplifier to be truly compatible, and could ultimately damage the amplifier.
If you are in doubt about speaker compatibility, please discuss this with your Gramofone agent, or contact us for advice.
